Warburg Pincus, Bharti to Acquire 49% Stake in Haier India

U.S. private equity firm Warburg Pincus and India’s Bharti Enterprises have agreed to jointly acquire a 49% stake in Haier India, marking a significant entry into India’s fast-growing consumer electronics and home appliances market. The stake will be purchased from China’s Haier Group, which will continue to hold 49% in the Indian unit, while the remaining 2% will be owned by employees.

The transaction comes at a time when India’s appliance market is expanding rapidly, driven by rising incomes and demand for premium electronics, and is currently dominated by global players such as Samsung and LG. While diplomatic relations between India and China have shown cautious improvement in recent months, Chinese investments in Indian companies continue to face regulatory scrutiny and require government approvals.

The companies did not disclose the deal value or valuation. However, Indian business daily Economic Times, citing industry executives, reported that Haier India could be valued at around 150 billion rupees (approximately $1.67 billion). Haier India manufactures air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, and kitchen appliances at its facilities in Pune and Greater Noida, positioning the company as a key player in India’s competitive appliance manufacturing landscape.
