C.P. Radhakrishnan Elected as India’s New Vice President
Indian lawmakers on Tuesday elected C.P. Radhakrishnan, a senior leader from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the country’s new vice president. The election was held more than a month after Jagdeep Dhankhar, the previous incumbent, resigned abruptly in July citing health reasons.
Radhakrishnan, 68, who was serving as the governor of Maharashtra, secured 452 of the 752 valid preferential votes in the secret ballot, defeating opposition nominee B. Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, who received 300 votes. His victory was widely expected given the BJP-led coalition’s strength in parliament.
The vice president holds the nation’s second-highest constitutional office and also serves as chair of the upper house of parliament. While the role is largely ceremonial, the vice president assumes presidential duties in case of a temporary vacancy.
