India Reacts Strongly to Canadian Allegations in Diplomatic Row
India has reacted sharply after being informed by Canada that its ambassador and other diplomats were named as “persons of interest” in a Canadian investigation. The Indian foreign ministry condemned the allegations, calling them “preposterous” and part of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “political agenda.” Delhi reserved the right to respond with further action but did not specify what steps it might take.
The diplomatic tension stems from Trudeau’s 2023 allegations that India may have been involved in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. India has repeatedly denied any involvement and expressed outrage at what it calls unsubstantiated accusations. The row led to a deterioration in relations, with India suspending visa services and asking Canada to reduce its diplomatic staff.
Nijjar, who supported the Khalistan movement for a separate Sikh homeland, was killed outside a temple in British Columbia in June 2023. Canada called it a targeted attack, while India labeled Nijjar a terrorist. Diplomatic tensions had slightly eased after India resumed visa processing in October 2023, but relations remain strained, with Canada warning of ongoing threats.
