SEBI appoints Madhabi Puri Buch as Chairman; The first woman to reach the rank

Madhabi Puri Buch has been appointed as the Chairperson of SEBI. Madhabi Puri Buch is the first woman chairperson in the history of SEBI. Their appointment is for three years. Madhabi Puri Buch has been appointed as the current chairman Ajay Tyagi, whose term expires today.

Despite some hints that Ajay Tyagi might be re-appointed, the name of the first woman chairperson was unexpectedly announced. Madhabi Puri Buch had earlier become the first woman to become a full-time member of SEBI. She was the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Securities from 2009-11. She left ICICI Bank in 2011 to join the Greater Pacific Capital Company in Singapore.

Madhabi Puri Buchi is the first woman to reach SEBI from the private banking sector. The appointment of the SEBI Chairman is decided by the Union Ministry of Finance. Earlier applications were invited for the post. Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the recruitment process was progressing.
