Iranian women win right to go to stadiums to watch football matches

Finally, after decades of relentless fight, the Iranian women have won the right to go to stadiums to watch football matches.

Pushing the ban to the past, the Iranian women have entered the gates of the Azadi Stadim in Tehran to watch a World Cup Qualifier Match between Iran and Cambodia. In the match, Iran has crushed Cambodia, scoring fourteen goals against null.

The women, who have gotten the opportunity to watch the match, expressed their happiness about the decision of the government to revoke the law that bans women from watching sports events.

The International community has welcomed the decision taken by the government in this matter.

The decision to revoke the ban has come on the wake of several dramatic events, including the suicide of a woman activist in protest against the Iranian judiciary’s decision to award a six month sentence to her for his attempt to watch a football match disguising as a man.

During the match, some women have raised slogans in support of the deceased woman, who they call by the name ‘Blue Girl’ honouring her liking for a local football club whose jersey is blue in colour.

Iran’s decision to revoke the ban has come not only because of the pressure from the national and International communities, but also due to the pressure from the FIFA, the main football regulatory authority.
