Jammu and Kashmir removed from article 370

Amit Shah, Union Home Minister announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has decided to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Amit Shah moved the amendment amid uproar by opposition members.

“I am presenting the resolution to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir except the first clause 370 (1),” said Amit Shah. Following his speech created ruckus and the House was discontinued.

According to the Article 370 of the constitution in grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir and on the other hand Article 35A empowers the state legislature to define the state “permanent residents” and their special privileges and rights.

Jammu and Kashmir have been divided and will no longer be a state and will remain a union territory with legislature and Ladakh will be a union territory with no legislature. “It is the darkest day of the Indian democracy,” said Mehbooba Mufti, Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
