Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar files his resignation

The Indian Solicitor General, Ranjit Kumar, has filed his resignation in the office of Law Minister today.

Earlier, there were reports that he was being considered for the post of the Supreme Court judge by the collegium who recommends the names of those who are to be appointed as the judge by the government.

Mr Kumar, who had been initially appointed to the post of the Solicitor General in June 2014, was reappointed to the post recently by the same government, which had inducted him to the second highest law officer post for the first time immediately after the formal start of the new Saffron regime.

It seems that those appointed to the top Indian law offices seldom prefer to take up the office for the second time.

Earlier, Mukul Rohatgi, the former Attorney General, informed the respective authorities that he was not interested in a second term.

The Attorney General and Solicitor General are the top two law officers. Technically, they are the government’s lawyers. They are responsible to give sensible advises to the government whenever there is a requirement.

At this moment, it is not clear who will replace Ranjit Kumar.
