Karnataka Climax

When finally the result of the confidence motion was announced in the Karnataka legislative assembly on last day, there was only silence left in the side where the ruling JD(S)-Congress coalition members sat. Though the result was not unexpected, there was disappointment in the face of the members supporting the ruling front. In the confidence motion, the JD(S)-Congress coalition government, led by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, failed to win more than 99 votes in support. On the other hand, as many as 105 votes were polled against the motion to defeat the motion moved by the CM to save his minority government.

The declaration of the result has paved the way for the induction of the BJP led government in the state. With nearly 105 members in the house, the BJP has clear majority in the house at present.

What that will decide the future of the next government is the upcoming by-elections. The by-elections need to be conducted in the constituencies from where the resigned MLAs were elected last time. Whether the resigned MLAs will represent the constituency this time or their close ones depends on what decision the speaker will take on the resignations submitted by the dissent MLAs.

That means that what happened last day is not a climax. The developments indicate that the drama still continues.
