Umar Khalid surrenders to the police

Umar Khalid, JNU student who is charged with sedition surrendered to the Delhi Police along with Anirban Bhattacharya on Tuesday night after the Delhi court directed them to give themselves in. Two left the campus in a university vehicle around 11:45pm. Deepak Mishra, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) confirmed the arrest. Both Umar and Anirban moved the High Court seeking protection in order to surrender, but the court adjourned the hearing for protection till Wednesday.

Three other students Ashutosh Kumar, Anant Prakash, Rama Naga, are wanted by the police in a sedition case. Ashutosh Kumar is a former Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union President.

They were charged with sedition for conducting an event for marking the anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s execution, where anti-slogans were raised. AISF student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on sedition charges.
