Top court sends notice on petition against Madras HC’s order curb powers of Puducherry LG

The Supreme Court of Indian has send notice on a petition filed against the Madras High Court’s order that paves way for the reduction of the power of the office of Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Puducherry, which is located close to Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Madras HC recently held that the continuous interference of the Puducherry LG in the day to day affairs of the state administration would amount to the creation of a parallel government like situation in the state.

The top court has issued notice to all parties who are involved in the dispute.

When similar dispute emerged in the Indian state of Delhi, where a similar political situation exists, the judicial system supported the office of elected representatives.

Recently, the Solicitor General informed the court that the government came to a standstill after the High Court had delivered its order.

The UT of Puducherry is witnessing a tough political battle between the central government’s nominee and the state elected representatives, which belong to a party that opposes those ruling the central government.
