Top court restrains Assam’s welfare scheme

The Supreme Court of India on last day restrained the implementation of CM’s welfare project in Assam. A petition filed by a NGO alleged that the project was extremely distorted by the corruption and it is aiming at electoral gains. Reports say that it was a huge welfare project and around five-hundred crores were allowed from the public-fund for the project. A Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice TS Thakur, orders that the state could not implement the project until further direction from the court. It is learned that the court, in its preliminary observation, found that the project was aiming at electoral gains and the government has no-data about the beneficiaries of the scheme. Kapil Sibal, state representative, defended the government’s version, and claims that the government cannot find the data of the beneficiaries of a vast project. Refuting the state’s claim, the court reminded that it is government’s duty to find the proper beneficiaries when it is distributing the public fund.  Meanwhile, the NGO alleges that the government is showing some kind of favouritism towards its workers. The warfare scheme was actually announced to help the widow pensioners and self-help groups, it added.  But, the CM’s party workers had hijacked the benefits, alleges the NGO. However, the government ridiculed the allegations against the CM’s welfare scheme.   Earlier, the Gauhati HC refused to stay the tainted project. But, later the NGO approached the Supreme Court.
