Actress Sumalatha has officially announced her plan to contest from Mandya as an independent candidate.

In the press conference organised to publicise her plan to contest in the upcoming general election, prominent Kannada actor Naveen Kumar Gowda alias Yash, who recently stunned the Indian film industry with his successful action film KGF, has appeared to support the actress. Apart from Yash, several prominent Kannada actors have already offered their support to the veteran actress.

The prime candidate who is going to contest against the actress is also a popular actor in the Kannada film industry. That actor is Nikhil, the son of Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy. In that context, the support the actress has received from the young actors of Kannada film industry is also of great importance.

Actress Sumalatha is the wife of actor-turned-congress leader Ambareesh, who passed away a year before. When the actress has publicised her plan to contest in the election, many have opined that she would be brought into the political platform by the Congress. In contrary, she has been criticised disrespectfully by a senior leader of a party that shares close connection with the Congress, questioning her morals. In fact, that criticism has boosted her public image and helped her to actualise her intention to contest in the election.

Actually, actor Nikhil’s entrance to the electoral politics as a JD(S)-Congress candidate has not been without opposition. Even a social media campaign has been launched to portray the actor’s entrance as the sign of the existence of dynasty politics in the state.

The BJP has decided not to field a candidate in Mandya. The rightists are likely to stand by the actress to defeat the Congress-JD(S) faction.

Sumalatha has recently visited several senior BJP leaders to request their support, as well as several the leaders of several non-political organisation active in the political hemisphere of Karnataka, especially in and around the Mandya constituency.

Undisputedly, Mandya will be one of those constituencies in the Indian state of Karnataka which will witness a tough fight in this general election.

Can the confused candidate circumvent this crucial crisis?
