Somnath Chatterjee Obituary: Red sun sets in Bengal

Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who was one of the most acceptable political leaders in the country, has died early today because of some heart and kidney related ailments.

He was the son of renowned political leader Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee. Like his father, Mr Somnath Chatterjee also had many friends outside the political spectrum he supported. Unlike his rightist father, he was a renowned leftist.

Unfortunately, the leftist political party, which he stood for, expelled him as he showed no interest to resign from the speaker post of the Lower House of the parliament when the leftist party withdrawn their support to the alliance, which had offered the respected port to Mr Chatterjee, during the year 2008.

Despite the expulsion, several senior communist leaders, like the leaders belonging to other political spectrum, maintained a cordial relation with Mr Chatterjee.

He was a very popular leader in West Bengal. He was elected from the state to the Lower House more than a dozen times. He never faced any election defeat in his political life, except his electoral defeat against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Many senior political leaders have expressed their condolence at the demise of the great communist leader of West Bengal.

May his ‘Red’ soul rest in peace!
