Proposal recommending death punishment for rape of minors presented before cabinet

In the wake of the shocking incidents of the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua and the rape of a minor girl allegedly by a law maker in Unnao, a proposal recommending death punishment for rape of minors has been developed.

The aforesaid proposal has been presented before the cabinet for its consideration. As per a latest report, in the cabinet meeting which is likely to take place later today, the government will decide how the proposal can be implemented immediately.

At this moment, it is not clear whether the central government will release an ordinance related to this proposal.

The proposal was originally proposed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development led by Maneka Gandhi. It was subsequently forwarded to the Law Ministry for its consideration.

As per a report, the Law Ministry has already approved the proposal forwarded to them by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

According to the proposal, the highest punishment of death penalty shall be given to those convicted of sexually abusing children up to twelve years of age.

Recently, the government informed the top court that it was considering an amendment in the POSCO Act to introduce death punishment for rape of minor.
