Presidential election takes place today

The crucial presidential election in which the NDA’s candidate, Ram Nath Kovind, contests against the opposition parties’ candidate, Meira Kumar, is taking place in the country today. It is learned that the ruling NDA government expects a clear majority as it holds a concrete advantage in terms of the numbers. India follows the indirect form of the presidential election. Only the members of the parliament (expect those members nominated by the president) and the members of the legislative assemblies are eligible to vote for the presidential candidate. It is expected that the NDA members and some regional parties such as AIDMK may vote for the NDA candidate while the members of the seventeen opposition parties including the Congress Party, are likely to support the Opposition-Block’s candidate. Unexpectedly, in the last minute, the NDA’s candidate has acquired an additional impetus by winning the support of the Shiv Sena and JD(U) –in Bihar, JD(U) was a part of the Grand Alliance which defeated the BJP in the Bihar Assembly Election which was one of the big defeat faced by the BJP led NDA in the recent history. In sharp contrast to the national scenario, in Kerala, almost all votes, except one of only BJP lawmaker from the state O Rajagopal’s vote, are expected to go in support of Meira Kumar. As per the report, the result of the presidential election will be announced on July 21. Notably, the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, according to the media report, has congratulated the NDA’s candidate in advance, expressing openly his confidante in his candidate’s victory.
