Around twenty-two people have been killed, and at least thirty people injured, in the terrible stampede occurred in the Prabhadevi Railway Station in Mumbai.

It has been reported that the unfortunate incident occurred when a huge crowd gathered on the narrow bridge in order to escape from the heavy rain. The report has added that when the people were standing in the bridge one man accidentally slipped pushing others. The report has further added that that particular incident was the triggering point of the terrible stampede.

It is alleged that though many leaders including the Shiv Sean leaders and Congress leaders have been demanding a solution to the issue of overcrowding at the Mumbai railway stations, the BJP led government in the centre has shown no interest in investing in these renovation projects as their priorities have been different from that of the erstwhile government.

Anyway, the BJP has, in the beginning itself, tactically blocked the narrative from taking such a dimension by saying that ‘it is unfair to give political colour to this incident’.

Apart from the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, many political leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, have expressed condolence.

Who will take the responsibility of this disaster?

It is to be noted that the Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal, has personally monitored the rescue operation. Also, it is important to note that the National Disaster Response Force has done an appreciable job.

The Maharashtra government has decided to give a compensation of five lakh each to the kin of those died in the disaster and to bear the medical expenses of those injured.

A high-level investigation is on.
