MHA seeks clarification about Rahul’s citizenship status

The Ministry of Home Affairs, which recently received a complaint from BJP MP Subramanian Swamy regarding the lack of clarity in the Congress president’s citizenship, has sought clarification from Rahul Gandhi about his citizenship status.

Mr Swamy, in his complaint against the Congress scion, alleged that in a document presented during the dissolution of one of his companies in the UK it was written that he was a British citizen.

It is not the first time such an allegation has been triggered against the Congress president.

In the recent past, several anti-Congress leaders have levelled the same allegation several times against the Congress’s top leader.

What is different this time is a competent authority to verify whether a person is an Indian citizen or not and whether a person has any other citizenship or not has intervened in the issue.

The Congress Party earlier denounced all allegations aimed to question the nationality of their leader as politically motivated.

The Grand Old Party has not made an official response about the latest development in the citizenship row.

India does not encourage dual citizenship system. Normally, an Indian citizen has to cancel his citizenship to become a citizen of another country.

If the allegation is proved right, the Congress president’s candidature can be questioned, as only Indian citizens are eligible to contest in the Indian elections.
