India’s candidature for UNSC non-permanent seat endorsed by Asia-Pacific group

India is likely to become a member of the United Nations Security Council in the near future itself. The foundation has been created for the elevation, as the powerful Asia-Pacific group, which is constituted of around 50 members, has supported the India government’s claim for the non-permanent seat of the UNSC.

The UNSC has nearly fifteen chars. Of these fifteen, at least five are permanent and the rest is non-permanent. The non-permanent seats are distributed on the basis of region. Around five is allotted to the Africa and Asia states. One is given to the Eastern European states and at least two is earmarked for the Latin American states and Caribbean states. To the Western European and other states, nearly two is allotted.

Election for the non-permanent seats happens every year. Each year five member leave and five members enter. The total term of a non-permanent seat is around two years.

The least time India became a member of the UNSC was on the year 2011. Before that, at least six times the country enjoyed that position.

A membership in the UNSC means a greater opportunity to participate in the deeper discussions happen in the UN.

The UK, the US, China, France and Russia are the five permanent members of the UNSC. They have the power to veto any matter presented in the body.

The world’s largest democratic country’s candidature for the UNSC non-permanent seat come at a time when the world is increasingly discussing about the expansion of the UNSC permanent membership considering the present realities of the world.
