India to buy 72,400 assault rifles from the US

India has signed a contract to buy as many as 72,400 SIG 716 assault rifles from Sig Sauer, the firearm designer and manufacturer based in the United States.

The country is expected to ink another contract to buy nearly 93,895 carbines in the near future.

It was a year before that the Defence Acquisition Council approved the proposal to buy nearly 72,400 assault rifles and over 93,895 carbines.

As per a report, the official negotiations for the purchase of the carbines are at present in the final stage.

The new purchases will increase the strength of the Indian forces. Of the 72,400 SIG 716 assault rifles purchased by India, at least 66,400 will be given to the Air Force, 4,000 to the navy and the rest (2,000) to the navy.   

It is estimated that the entire deal would cost around 3,547 crore.
