India set to elect Vice President today

The members of the Indian Parliament are set to elect the Vice-President of the country today. M Venkaiah Naidu represents the BJP faction in the VP election while the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C Rajagopalachari, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, is the candidate of the Congress led faction. There are nearly seven hundred and ninety members in the parliament –five hundred and forty five members in Lok Sabha and two hundred and forty five members in Rajya Sabha. The BJP which is the ruling party of the country has an overwhelming majority of nearly two hundred and eight one members in Lok Sabha. It is also the single largest party in the Rajya Sabha, with the total strength of fifty eight members. Meanwhile, the total strength of the Congress Party members in Lok Sabha stands below fifty and in Rajya Sabha around fifty seven. It is clear that the NDA’s candidate, Mr Naidu is likely to grab a huge victory. Anyway, Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi’s candidateship has helped the congress party to bring all the non-NDA parties in a single platform to defend the NDA’s candidate. It is apparent that had the congress party select any other person as their candidate each non-NDA parties would have different candidates and preferences. The voting has started in the parliament at 10 am today. The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath have been among the first to cast their vote. The result of the VP election will be publicised by the concerned authority by 7 pm today.
