Former Prez Pranab Mukherjee advises to increase Lok Sabha seats to 1000

Former President Pranab Mukherjee has advised the government to increase the total strength of the lower house of the parliament to at least 1,000 from the present strength of around 543.

It was on the year 1977 that the strength of the Lok Sabha was revered the last time. That reversal was based on the 1971 census report.

The aforesaid fact has been pointed by the former President also.

The crucial comment over the strength of the assembly has been made while he was speaking in the second annual Atal Bihari Vajpayee memorial lecture.

Speaking in the lecture, he has also suggested the increase of the strength of the Rajya Sabha in accordance with the increase suggested for the Lok Sabha.

Notably, the former President has also used the opportunity to express his respect for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his quality of consensus building.

It is high time to evaluate whether there is an urgent need to reverse the present strength of the Lok Sabha as per the latest census report or not.

The present population is almost double of what it was during the year 1971. By that logic, the suggested reversal is the need of the time.
