Fifty phase of general election begins today

The fifth phase of the general election has begun today. In the phase, the voting is taking place in over 51 Lok Sabha across seven states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand.

It is in this phase that the people will decide who should be the representative of Amethi, the constituency in which a tough fight between Congress president Rahul Gandhi and BJP actor-turned-leader and central minister Smriti Irani is happening, and which is known as the indestructible fort of the Congress Party.

Other renowned leaders who are in the fray are former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister and former BJP president Rajnath Singh. When Mr Singh is contesting in Lucknow (situated in Uttar Pradesh), the Congress leader is competing from the Raebareli constituency (the constituency in UP known as the bastion of the Grand Old Party).

This phase is crucial for the BJP. In the previous general election, the saffron camp won at least 41 of the total 51 seats which are in the poll stations today. In that election, the BJP alone wristed around 39 of this 51 seats.

No serious disturbances have been reported so far from anywhere in this phase. It is hoped that it will be a peaceful phase.
