He ruled Nigeria from January 1984 to August 1985 in which he was declared as the military leader. He has become the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in Nigeria. Gen Buhari defeated the current president Goodluck Jonathan by more than 2.5 million votes. This was the time of celebration for Gen Buahri’s All Progressive Congress party. The APC won 15,424,921 votes and Mr. Jonathan’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) got 12,853,162 votes. Gen Buhari’s victory is a wonderful moment for Nigeria, since never before has been a current president been defeated in an election.
