Congress’s students union burns effigy of PM Modi at JNU

In what could be termed as an utter nonsense and extremely provocative move, the NSUI (National Students Union of India), a student’s wing of congress party, reportedly burned an effigy carrying heads of BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Dussehra night at JNU campus. Earlier also, the JNU students had demonstrated similar provocative moves against the BJP-led central government’s rule and its extreme rightist ideologies. Recently, some students studying in the JNU campus including JNUSU President Kanhaya Kumar were arrested by the Delhi police after they had raised anti-national slogans in a program organised inside the college. Over these years, the JNU has transformed into one of the most sensitive campuses in the country. Due to its leftist culture, the campus was often targeted by the right-wing hardliners. Dussehra is celebrated to signify the victory of good over the bad. A NSUI member informed a prominent national daily that the students demonstrated this kind of protest to express their disagreement with the policies initiated by the BJP government. He reportedly added that the BJP government is supporting anti-poor and anti-people policies. A right-wing student leader claims that by doing such an act the organisers of the event have defamed the country and the Prime Minister. It is learned that the college authorities has launched a probe into the issue. It is said that the concerned authorities will take strict action against the perpetrators of the attack.
