AMU row: no compromise on minority status, says VC

Considering several factors including student’s opinions and alumni’s requests, the top authority of the Aligarh Muslim University has decided to protect the minority status of the university at any cost. Reports say that several request letters from the alumni and well-wishers of the university demanding protection of minority status of the renowned Muslim institution had been received by the AMU officials recently. It seems that the well-wishers, alumni, students and AMU authority strongly believe that the BJP government is trying to play polarisation tactics by making unnecessary controversies regarding AMU minority status. Experts say that the Hindutva agenda formulated by the extreme rightist groups are aiming at the UP assembly elections. At the same time, students who are currently studying in that university have strongly criticised the BJP’s, so called, polarisation-plans and staged numerous demonstrations to express their disapproval. Since Independence era, the university had been a strong hold of the Muslim politics in North India and it played a prominent role in moulding renowned intellectuals from the marginalised community. The university was established in 1875. Initially, it was a small madrassa. Later, it turned into Mohammadan Anglo Oriented College. And, eventually, it flourished itself as one of the most-reputed minority institution in our country and assumed a new name as AMU. However, the Vice-Chancellor of the university reportedly admitted that currently there is an anti-BJP trend growing among the students of the university. He reportedly warned that the government will have to face unexpected consequences if they try to change the minority status.     Recently, the central government reportedly informed the Supreme Court of India that the AMU was not a minority university.
