Amidst protests, fresh triple talaq bill moved in Lok Sabha

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2019, popularly known as the Triple Talaq bill, has been tabled in the lower house of the Indian parliament by the BJP-led NDA government Today.

As soon as the bill has been presented, several members of the house, particularly the opposition members, have stood up in protest against the bill.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, and RSP leader N K Premchandran are the prominent figures who have expressed their disagreement against the bill in the house.

Interestingly, the Trivandrum MP has demanded for a law, which is universally applicable to all in case of abandoning wives, by pointing out the fact that abandoning wives is not unique to a particular community.

Mr Tharoor and Mr Owaisi have mentioned the issue of double standard by highlighting two different points. When the former has pointed out the punishment issue, the latter has brought in the Sabrimala issue.

The government has defended the bill on the ground of gender justice, saying that it is not the question of religion but about justice to women.

The Triple Talaq bill is the first bill presented before the lower house of the parliament by the second NDA regime.
