After long standoff, SC agrees to encourage Centre’s interference in judicial appointments

Diluting the strength of the collegium system through which the judges of Supreme Court and High Court are appointed, unprecedentedly encouraging the interference of the centre government in the judicial appointment, and putting an end to the months-long standoff between the centre government and the top court over the issue regarding the proposal that enables the centre to reject the collegium’s recommendation on the top judicial appointment under the national security ground, the new Supreme Court Chief Justice, J S Khehar, who replaced the former CJI T S Thakur who strongly opposed all kinds of interference of the centre government on the judicial affairs, has passed the new Memorandum for Appointment of the judges to the SC and HC which gives legal validity to the controversial proposal. As per the reports, our judicial system is presently undergoing a serious crisis as most of our courts are facing the adverse effects of the lack of proper staff strength. There are lots of vacancies in the top courts kept unfilled making the day to day function of the prime pillar of democracy nearly a standstill. Anyway, it is still one of the most trusted and least corrupted systems of our democratic country. Experts say that the attempt to install secretariats in the court under the new proposal would adversely affect the autonomous status of the institution which needs to be placed at a position where it is hard for any political or populous appeal to interfere or mess with.
